The Adult Hapkido program follows the Jun Sa lineage, a modern expression of Grandmaster Choi Yong Sool’s original system, incorporating Master Edgardo Perez’s Combat Hapkido into a form uniquely ours . The name Hapkido—“the way of coordinated power”—reflects its core theory: harmonizing an opponent’s force with one’s own in order to redirect and reflect it into an effective counterattack. The result is a pragmatic close-quarter combat style that transforms size and strength into leverage, making the art accessible to every adult regardless of age and/or fitness level.
Classes begin with a focused warm-up and stretching, followed by strikes, kicks, and conditioning drills that build power and endurance. The heart of each session is structured partner work drawn from a belt/level based curriculum. Lower belts master foundational skills—dropping the center, taking your opponent’s balance, and finding the circle in every technique. As students advance, techniques grow in complexity: joint locks become more direct and weapon work expand to include the baston, bo staff, and cane. Breath work and flowing techniques round out the curriculum.
Every class reinforces the principle that true mastery in Hapkido is lifelong and cyclical. Higher belt students continually refine lower-belt fundamentals with ever-deeper understanding. Teaching these same principles to newer practitioners becomes an essential part of learning; senior students guide junior ones through their belts, gaining clarity and depth of understanding with each successive explanation. The environment remains challenging yet cooperative, pushing technical growth while fostering mutual respect, patience, and shared progress on the path to coordinated power.
